Evening in Transylvania for Orchestra This is the second piece in my series for high school/youth orchestra. “Evening Transylvania for Orchestra” was inspired by the old Bela Lugosi movie “Dracula.” In this composition, I attempt to create an haunting yet passionate soundscape complete with coffins opening and bats fluttering.
The piece opens with the bells of midnight as Dracula arises from his coffin. The tension increases as the bold main theme is heard throughout the orchestra. The piece then calms down and transitions to the middle slow and passionate middle section. Here, a violin solo expresses the more romantic and intriguing side of Dracula's personality which lures his prey to there ultimate fate. The mood then changes with a reprise of the more sinister Dracula theme which goes through several mutations up to the end of the piece.
The mood of the piece ranges from mysterious and passionate to bold and frightening. The length of the piece is approximately 7 minutes and uses a standard orchestration of winds, brass, strings and percussion. I have kept the difficulty of the piece to well within the ability of an average high school or youth orchestra.
