The Music of Keith Bajura

Sinfonia di Requiem

Sinfonia di Requiem was composed in the fall of 1990 in memory of the my father who unexpectantly died in 1985.  Unlike other, more traditional requiems, it it scored for orchestra only.  It is more of a tone poem than an actual Requiem Mass, and therefore does not follow the traditional form of the Requiem Mass. I intended not to create a functional Mass for the dead, but more of a work than embodies what a Requiem means.

The work is based on two distinct themes. The first, which opens the work, is very slow and expressive, with large jumps and tense harmonies. The treatment of this theme is quasi-fugal at the beginning of the work, i.e., it is passed through all of the instruments of the orchestra.  The second theme of the work is based on a fast rhythmic pattern of 7/8 time. This theme is unpredictable and is always changing, going through many transfigurations including a slow and lyrical treatment.  The work concludes with both themes being superimposed within the framework of the uneven 76/8 meter.  The difficulty of the piece falls within that of an average college or youth orchestra.
